A Potential Return to MMA for Matt Riddle in 2024
Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestling star Matt Riddle has hinted at a potential return to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition in 2024. At 37, Riddle's combat sports journey may come full circle as he flirts with the idea of stepping back into the ring or cage, leaving fans and analysts speculating about his next move.
Exploring Options Across Promotions
Riddle has been in discussions with various fighting promotions, though details remain closely guarded. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," Riddle disclosed to MMA Junkie. He added, "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon." This statement has fueled rumors and reports, including those from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, which mentioned potential offers from both bare-knuckle fighting organizations and the Professional Fighters League (PFL).
Looking Back at Riddle's MMA Career
Riddle's tenure in MMA is marked by notable highs and some controversy. His last fight took place in February 2014 against Michael Kuiper under the Titan FC banner. Prior to that, Riddle had made a name for himself in the UFC, exiting the promotion on a four-win streak in 2013 after a victory over Che Mills. However, two of those wins were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, a substance for which Riddle was outspokenly advocating.
The circumstances surrounding Riddle's departure from the UFC were contentious. UFC President Dana White publicly criticized Riddle following his release. Reflecting on this, Riddle said, "I have to thank Dana because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me." He credits White's criticism with helping him connect with fans and shaping his 'bro' character: "Putting me on blast and doing that, I think a lot of people could relate with me."
Transition to Professional Wrestling
After leaving MMA, Riddle quickly pivoted to professional wrestling. He began training in 2014 and debuted in 2015, making waves in various independent circuits and capturing several titles along the way. His wrestling prowess did not go unnoticed, leading to his joining WWE NXT in 2018 where he claimed the NXT Tag Team Championship alongside Pete Dunne.
Riddle's success continued as he ascended to WWE's main roster, winning the United States Championship in February 2021. Not one to rest on his laurels, Riddle formed a popular tag team known as "RK-Bro" with veteran wrestler Randy Orton. Together, they secured the Raw Tag Team Championship twice, cementing Riddle's status as a formidable competitor in the squared circle.
Martial Arts Remain a Staple
Despite his wrestling commitments, Riddle has maintained his martial arts regimen, training multiple times a week. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Riddle's dedication to combat sports is evident. His recent sighting at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando suggests his continued interest in the fight scene.
The Future for Matt Riddle
As for what lies ahead, Riddle keeps an open mind. "I never say never," he muses regarding a UFC return, indicating that despite past grievances, he is willing to consider all opportunities. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge," Riddle stated.
Reflecting on his career trajectory, Riddle acknowledges his unique path: "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he explained. Pro wrestling has treated him well, but the allure of combat sports competition still beckons. "I did good (and am) still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"
As Riddle contemplates his future, whether in wrestling or MMA, his competitive spirit remains undimmed. With a potential MMA comeback on the horizon, Matt Riddle's career continues to be one to watch, as he defies convention and pursues excellence across multiple arenas of combat sports.
