White Joins Team USA in Unexpected Turn of Events

As Derrick White stood on the practice courts Sunday, it marked the beginning of another unexpected chapter in his basketball journey. White, who had arrived at 2:30 a.m. after a long flight from the U.S., was called up to replace the injured Kawhi Leonard. While his summer plans initially included a family vacation in Cabo, life had other plans for the Boston Celtics guard.

A Familiar Scenario

This isn't the first time White has found himself thrust into the spotlight at the last minute for Team USA. His journey with the national team recalls a similar story from 2019 when he was a last-minute addition to the senior team for the World Cup in China. Back then, White had been playing with the Select Team and secured the final roster spot after higher profile guards like De'Aaron Fox and Trae Young withdrew. Reflecting on the experience, White said, "It was crazy going from the Select Team to the World Cup team, and I just think now I've just continued to get better and better and so feel much more comfortable. I feel (now) like I did back then and I'm just excited to be here."

From Parker to the World Stage

This recent call-up came while White was in his hometown of Parker, Colorado, conducting his annual basketball camp. The excitement of his young campers was palpable as they witnessed their mentor's sudden summoning to national duty. It's a remarkable twist in a summer that already held significant milestones for White, who recently agreed to a four-year, $126 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics.

A Champion's Return

The Celtics' NBA title last month marked a pinnacle of a season noted for White's defensive versatility and high-impact plays. His efforts did not go unnoticed, and his championship experience is expected to bring added value to Team USA. Upon reuniting with Celtics teammates Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum, as well as former team advisor Jeff Van Gundy, now an assistant with Team USA, the sense of camaraderie was strong. "I haven't seen D-White since the parade, so excited to have him here. He'll bring some championship DNA to this team," remarked Tatum.

Facing Adversity

Forward Kevin Durant would miss Monday's exhibition game against Australia due to a rehabilitating strained calf. Coach Steve Kerr announced Durant did not have contact at practice and focused on shooting drills and rehab work. Although Durant's absence will be felt, White's defensive prowess, adaptability, and recent championship experience make him a valuable asset for Team USA in these challenging times.

White's unexpected inclusion represents not just a personal achievement but also a testament to his resilience and commitment to the sport. As he embarks on this new chapter, the basketball world watches eagerly, anticipating the high-impact plays and defensive tenacity that have come to define his career.
