The California Classic, an increasingly significant NBA Summer League event, showcased a blend of emerging talent and seasoned expertise. Hosted over four days at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center and San Francisco's Chase Center, the Classic saw a variety of teams and players delivering compelling performances.
Star-Studded Teams and Venues
Sacramento brought together the Kings, Hornets, Spurs, and even the Chinese National Team for a round-robin competition. San Francisco’s Chase Center, meanwhile, hosted a second Kings summer league squad alongside teams from the Warriors, Heat, and Lakers. This unique setup cultivated a competitive atmosphere as players and teams sought to make an early impression before moving on to larger stages.
Stephon Castle’s Breakout Performance
Among the standout performers, Stephon Castle of the San Antonio Spurs anchored his team with a series of stellar outings. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Castle logged an impressive 18 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals in his final game at the California Classic. His versatility and comfort on the court were clearly evident. "I'm comfortable really anywhere out on the court. I will say I'm probably most comfortable on the ball, but if I play off the ball, I still feel 100% comfortable there," Castle noted, further adding, "Just being with the kinda team that we have, I feel like we will have five guys that can dribble, pass, and shoot. The positions are out of the equation a little bit."
Castle's performance sets a promising tone as he prepares for the main Summer League event in Las Vegas, where more eyes and higher stakes await him.
Challenges for Tidjane Salaün
While some players thrived, others faced obstacles. The Hornets’ No. 6 pick, Tidjane Salaün, had to miss the event due to a minor laceration near his knee. His absence was felt, especially as other rookies like Castle capitalized on their opportunity to shine.
Keon Ellis and the Kings
For the Kings, Keon Ellis demonstrated his scoring prowess with a remarkable 30-point game, albeit in a narrow loss to the Warriors. His shooting accuracy, reflected in last season's 41.7% from beyond the arc, continues to be a critical asset for Sacramento.
During the competition, the Warriors narrowly defeated the Kings 91-90 in a thrilling finale at Chase Center. This victory secured the Warriors the inaugural "Mitch Richmond Trophy" in the Battle of NorCal Summer League game, symbolizing their dominance in this new tradition.
Bronny James’ Spurs Experience
Bronny James represented the Lakers, marking his presence with noteworthy performances, including seven rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and two steals across the event. However, his journey was not without challenges. James experienced knee swelling, causing him to miss the game against the Warriors. Despite this setback, he managed to contribute three points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in a game against Miami.
Knecht's Consistency
Knecht, another player to watch, contributed significantly with 20 points in the game against the Heat. Over the course of the event, he recorded a field goal percentage of 30.2% and a three-point shooting rate of 26.7%, indicating areas for improvement as he continues to develop.
Veterans' Influence
The Spurs also made headlines by adding veterans Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes to their roster. Their experience and leadership will undoubtedly be invaluable to a team ripe with young talent, such as Stephon Castle.
A Growing Tradition
The California Classic, now in its sixth year, has cemented its place as a vital precursor to the Las Vegas Summer League. It offers a platform where rookies can showcase their skills and veterans can help guide the next generation. This year's event, filled with memorable performances and emerging stars, promises a bright future for the upcoming Las Vegas Summer League and the broader NBA season.
